The world's most powerful nuclear-powered icebreaker Arctic is preparing for testing

The lead nuclear icebreaker of project 22220 ("Arctic") is being built by order of the state corporation Rosatom. Icebreakers of this type will become the largest and most powerful in the world. They will be put into operation in the next couple of years. In the meantime, a reactor unit was launched at the Arctic.

The icebreaker is equipped with two nuclear power plants with RITM 200 reactors. The thermal power of each is 175 megawatts. First, the reactors must be brought to the minimum power level sufficient to control the reaction, then to the energy power level. After that, the Arctic sea trials will begin. This was reported to RIA Novosti by a representative of Rosatom.

The icebreaker "Arctic" belongs to a new class of Russian nuclear-powered icebreakers LK-60Ya. The name stands for icebreaker, with a capacity of 60 MW, with a nuclear power plant. It is being built at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg, and it is planned to be commissioned in May 2020. Now the ship is about 90 percent ready.
