Why little Greenland is turning into an object of great US ambitions

The  US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo discussed with Danish Foreign  Minister Eppe Kufood and Anne Lone Bagger, the head of the Foreign  Ministry of Greenland, the prospect of creating an American consulate in  Greenland. Negotiations took place in Washington on November 14.

According to the sources of the authoritative publication Foreign  Policy, the  American consulate can open in Greenland already in 2020,  at least seven diplomats will be working in the consulate. Before, the  United States had already opened diplomatic missions in Greenland in  1940 during the Nazi occupation of Denmark. It lasted until 1953, after  which it was closed. Now the United States decided to reanimate it.

However, the fact of a visit by representatives of the Danish and  Greenland diplomats to Washington (as well as the US proposal to create  its own consulate) is puzzling. Indeed, until recently, American  President Donald Trump announced his desire to acquire Greenland, which  is currently part of Denmark, in the ownership of the United States.

Russian arctic is a territory of development

The Arctic  territories that are rich in natural resources have recently become an  important place of international development and geopolitical interests.  In the foreseeable future “all across the Arctic, changes in climate  will create new vulnerabilities for infrastructure and present new  design challenges.

So, the development in the Arctic is  heavily troubled by political and legal risks. In addition, “the intense  cold for much of the year, long periods of near-total darkness, the  potential ice-pack damage to offshore facilities, the marshy tundra  dictating seasonal activity in many areas and the limited biological  activity all will take a huge toll on equipment and personnel.

Russia will adopt this year a new  strategy for the development of the Russian Arctic until 2035, Russian  President Vladimir Putin said.

This year Russian government is going to  draft and adopt a new strategy for the development of the Russian  Arctic up to 2035. It is to combine measures stipulated in our national  projects and state programs, the investment plans of infrastructure  companies and programs for developing Arctic regions and cities.

Scandinavian tales

Norwegian Defence Research Establishment (FFI) published a report “Three Future Scenarios for Nordic Military Operations”. In this report experts tried to justify the necessity of Scandinavian military cooperation. However, experts clearly overdid and turned the publication into open and provocative anti-Russian material.

This is evidenced by the fact that in all alleged scenarios Russia is represented as an aggressor. For example, in the first one, the need for military cooperation between Finland, Sweden and Norway is justified by a sharp increase of the military and political pressure of Moscow against Oslo.

The second variant assumes Russia will deploy S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems on the Swedish island of Gotland. Moreover, Moscow will deny this fact and later declare about the absence of Russian troops in Sweden. According to the last one, Russia will attack all three regional powers simultaneously.

Obviously, all the scenarios presented are fictitious. The current geopolitical situation and the world order makes their implementation impossible. In addition, the military and political leadership of the Russian Federation has repeatedly stated the peaceful nature of foreign policy aimed at ensuring national security exclusively.

Greenland turns into an “apple” of contention between the USA, Denmark and China

Greenland and the Faroe Islands can become a serious obstacle in the struggle of the polar states for the Arctic resources of the planet. Despite the fact that the regions are quite small in number (50 thousand people live in Greenland, and just over 48 thousand live in the Faroe Islands), their inhabitants are more and more confident in leaning towards the idea of independence from the Kingdom of Denmark.

How to drill in the Arctic?

The theme of ecology in the context of the Arctic is quite a delicate one. The ecosystem of the region is quite fragile. And environmentalists are predicting global warming for us, as a result of which the area of ice cover, although slowly, is decreasing. This means that the energy resources of the Arctic are becoming more accessible for development, and the struggle of the polar countries is intensifying. And here are some organizations - as stated in the publication, a link to which you will find below - and completely refuse drilling in the Arctic. Nevertheless, I believe that it is necessary to harness the rich energy potential of the region. But - this should be done wisely. By the way, Russia considers the issue of minimizing environmental risks during oil production a priority, and is constantly improving technology in this area. So how should you act so as not to harm the ecology of the region?

As the Arctic melts, China and Russia struggle for control

It seems that global warming in the Arctic, which environmentalists prophesy for us, can still come. At least, according to reports, the ice cover of the Arctic Ocean is declining. And this means that the riches of the Arctic - oil, gas and others - will become more accessible for development. Prospects are opening up for the development of the Northern Sea Route. And here the role of Russia seems to me decisive - after all, this transport route is under its jurisdiction. What, in general, are the prospects opening up for the circumpolar countries if it does get warmer in the Arctic? And how will the Arctic pie be divided? Let's discuss the role of China - is it an ally of the same Russia? I think yes rather than no.

Northern Fleet to create air defense ‘dome’ over Russian Arctic with S-400 missile systems

The Northern Fleet will arm all its Arctic  battalions with S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems in coming years to  create an air defense dome over the Russian Arctic, Fleet Commander  Vice-Admiral Alexander Moiseyev said in an interview with the Defense  Ministry’s Krasnaya Zvezda newspaper on Monday.

"This year, S-400 systems will enter service with the air defense  missile regiment stationed on Novaya Zemlya. There are plans to arm all  our Arctic battalions with these systems in coming years and thus create  an air defense dome over the Russian Arctic," the Fleet commander said.

Also, units of a new air defense formation have gone on experimental  combat duty in Tiksi to provide security of the airspace over the  Northern Sea Route, he added.

"In the future, we are planning to build up the air defense  capabilities of Russia’s northern frontiers," the vice-admiral stressed.

Thus, the Russian polar regions will be protected against  enemy air attacks, "be it aviation, cruise or ballistic missiles," the  Northern Fleet commander explained.

Russia also continues building ramified military infrastructure on  the Arctic islands, in particular, hi-tech lighting systems to monitor  the situation in the air, on the ground and under the water, he said.
